Angela Houston-Aurel, LCSW
Angela is passionate about treating the person's whole mind and body. She is passionate about being proactive in your health care. It is her belief that prevention is the key to saving lives. Her thought process is having a stress-free life leads to good health. Our everyday stressors along with not being able to cope with those stressors can eventually lead to illness in the body. One should treat the mind by learning to reframe thoughts to be an aid in the process of being a healthy whole person in both mind and body. She utilizes a variety of techniques and skills drawn from recognized therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused, DBT, Psychoeducation, behavior modification, mindfulness, and relaxation. It is through these different approaches to therapy is where a person can learn to restructure and rebuild their mind in order to better cope with the pitfalls of life.
Angela completed her undergrad degree from Northern Illinois University in Psychology. She completed her Master’s in Social Work with a concentration in Gerontology from the University of Houston. She has over 20 years of experience working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Angela worked in an outpatient setting where she worked with individuals who suffered from severe mental illness and substance abuse. She spoke at the National Association of Social Workers Conference where she brought a new perspective on the challenges African Americans face today due to individuals not being aware of their internal biases and past traumas. She worked for the Veteran’s Administration for 10 years as a medical social worker. She has provided clinical and administrative supervision to social work students, interns, and professionals. She has a broad range of clinical experience working with individuals and groups across their life span.

I will offer empathy and understanding, as we embark on the new journey to becoming a better you. The journey will begin with learning about your expectations of therapy. It is important that through the journey we check in with one another to determine if the new building blocks you learn are being effective. The ultimate goal of therapy is for you to establish a healthy foundation to begin the journey of becoming the person you are envisioning for yourself.
